DO I NEED A VISA TO VISIT KENYA?
Yes, you need a visa to enter Kenya. Please apply for a tourist visa in a Kenyan embassy. You can also obtain a visa at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport on your arrival. The VISA cost for a three-month tourist visa is 40 Euros or 50 USD. Your visa can be extended once at the Immigration Office in Nairobi after 3 months. You may use the address of VWB Office when filling in your visa application
WHY VOLUNTEER?
Volunteering is based on the concept of giving through the donation of your time, your skills, your energy and often just simply your presence to help others in need. However, while volunteers have a tremendous effect on the people they work with, you will very rarely find a volunteer who feels they have given more than they have received. The lessons and benefits that a volunteer receives while volunteering are endless and can include increased self-confidence and social awareness, development of life skills, personal growth, friendship and building of independence. Furthermore, volunteering can help to enhance career prospects. Not only do volunteers increase their skill base, work experience and international contacts through volunteering, employees often look favorably upon those that are willing to go outside of their comfort zone and give up their time to assist others.
WHY PAY TO VOLUNTEER?
As a volunteer you are giving up your time and your skills to help those in need, therefore many people fail to see why they should also have to pay to volunteer. The program fees you pay is used to pay for expenses associated with your stay such as food, accommodation, airport pickups and transfer back to the airport from program. orientation and staff salaries to ensure your volunteering stay in the host country goes as smoothly as possible.
WHAT DO MY FEES PAY FOR?
Registration Fee (Refundable if you choose not to go) – 24/7 support from VWB staff, program marketing costs, information pack, administration costs, travel costs to inspect programs and communication costs with volunteers. Program Fee – Airport pick up, orientation, program supervision, accommodation and meals during volunteer placement period, In-country 24/7 support and In-country administration costs.
WHAT ADDITIONAL COSTS WILL I HAVE?
Visa, flights, travel insurance (recommended), vaccinations, souvenirs, trips or tours you do while in the country, spending money (while volunteering in Kenya you will generally find US$20 to be sufficient for basic weekly expenses)
DO I NEED VACCINATIONS?
Yes, most likely you need vaccinations. Depending on your country of residence, you are required to take some vaccinations before you can enter Kenya. You should contact your preferred medical practice to be consulted on all medical issues. Please prepare on time, as some vaccinations need several injections.
HOW DO I VOLUNTEER WITH VWB?

CAN WE VOLUNTEER AS A GROUP?
Yes. VWB accepts group booking and can even organize special projects and discount rates, please email us to find out more.
CAN I VOLUNTEER WITH A FRIEND(S) OR A PARTNER?
Yes. VWB can ensure you are placed in the same accommodation and project as a friend or partner. All we ask is that when you apply you make a note on the application form with your friend's name stating you wish to be placed together.
I HAVE A CHILD WHO IS UNDER 18 AND WISHES TO VOLUNTEER. CAN THEY?
If a person is under 18 and wishes to volunteer abroad by themselves then written parental consent is imperative. Furthermore, if they are volunteering as part of a group (with adult minders) or with a family, guardian or parent/caregiver (18 or over) then this is fine. All we ask is that when they apply they note on their form the name of the person they are volunteering with (and their minder also does this on their form), so we can ensure they are placed together and our staff also know they are eligible to volunteer on our program.
WHERE WILL I STAY?
VWB will arrange an accommodation for your volunteer duration with us. There are the following possibilities: During the orientation • Nairobi – either in a host family or in the VWB Hostel. While volunteering in your project • Directly in the project • Host family • VWB Hostel
DO I NEED SPECIFIC SKILLS OR QUALIFICATIONS TO VOLUNTEER?
Generally the only requirement for volunteers is to be fluent in English. However, in most of the medical and health placements, volunteers must be qualified or training in a relevant medical field (documentation be presented to partner organization on arrival in host country). However, VWB has some requirements to be fulfilled by its volunteers: • Age: above 18 years from (If you are below 18 years you need a written consent from a guardian) • Knowledge of the English language is essential; A positive attitude towards independent progress of others • A willingness to adapt to local conditions • A desire to interact and understand other people’s culture and philosophy of life • Be open-minded and willing to freely exchange ideas, information and experiences without imposing your own values on others These simple ideas will make your time in Kenya a great success for you, your project and the community.
WHAT WILL I DO WITH MY IMPORTANT DOCUMENTS?
Make copies! Important documents (passport, data page and visa documents, credit cards, travel insurance policy, air/bus/train tickets, driving license etc.) should be photocopied before you leave home. Leave one copy with someone at home and keep another with you, separate from the originals. We strongly advise you to leave a copy of your passport and your visa at the VWB office.
WHERE CAN I GET MONEY IN KENYA?
There are ATM’s in every big town in Kenya. You do not need to carry traveler cheques or lots of cash. You should enquire in advance from your bank about the conditions and possibilities of withdrawing money with your bank card. Having a master/visa card is in every case advisable.
CAN I DONATE MONEY TO VWB?
If you are about to volunteer you will find many worthy causes when you arrive in your host country that you can donate the money to directly. VWB offers you the opportunity to donate to their projects however if you are not volunteering you can donate directly to them by clicking on the link to their website.
WILL VWB PICK ME UP FROM THE AIRPORT?
Yes, VWB will pick you up from the airport. (kindly note that all pick ups are only done from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport Nairobi) Before you start your journey to Kenya, please confirm with us, that we have received your correct flight details. The costs for two airport transports(1x Pick up after arrival & 1x Drop off before departure) are included in the fees. Any additional airport transport costs need to be refunded to VWB.
WILL I BE WORKING WITH OTHER VOLUNTEERS?
Some of our programs are flexible and if you wish to be placed by yourself you can, however in most cases you will be working and living with other volunteers.
IS TRAVEL INSURANCE INCLUDED IN THE PROGRAM COSTS?
In order to keep costs as low as possible for the volunteer we do not include travel insurance in our fees as we have found that generally volunteers can acquire it cheaper by getting it privately. Travel insurance is advised to volunteer abroad on a VWB volunteer program. While VWB will do everything it can to ensure your trip abroad, goes smoothly and is a fantastic, memorable
CAN I TAKE TIME OUT FROM VOLUNTEERING TO GO SIGHTSEEING?
Yes! We believe it is extremely important to "soak up" as much of a country as you can while you are there. Volunteer travellers will often spend thousands of dollars on their airfares and while we believe our trips are the most authentic way to experience a country (living and working with local people), tourist activities and in country travel will only enhance your experience. Our partner organizations are very flexible and often encourage you to take time out from volunteer work to travel and explore your host country. Our partner organizations also have partner tourist organizations and contacts to make this easier for you.
WHAT DO I HAVE TO BRING WITH ME?
Necessary goods • Mosquito net • Mosquito repellant • Torch/flashlight/headlight • Toiletries (including toilet paper) • First-aid kits • Sleeping bag Better to have • Sandals • Hat • Camera • Sun cream For interaction with people • Pictures of your country • Food from your country • Cultural materials (e.g. flag) • Toys for kids • Any other items you may deem necessary All things can be purchased before your departure in Nairobi. Don’t worry yourself and bring huge bags! Light travel is always the best way to travel.
IS KENYA SAFE FOR ME?
Yes, Kenya is a very secure country. VWB will provide you with the Do’s and Don’ts during your orientation. If you use some common sense, you are OK in Nairobi and anywhere else in the country. VWB works closely with government departments and different embassies.
